Dream of the Month (December 2007)
Dr. Holloway's Comments:
Striking characteristics: Dreams of being smothered in bed by monsters, ghosts or demons typically occur during times of emotional stress and uncertainty.
Dreams of in-bed suffocation and paralysis are common; the perpetrator is sometimes an old hag, the devil, or some unique monster. In distant history, these dreams were considered actual encounters with evil forces, as they often carry a tangible sense of danger igniting strong physical reactions.
There is often a personal stressor that catalyzes these dreams. The monster can be thought of as a force, situation or person the dreamer is pitted against. The dreamer is engaged in a battle of good and evil, personally or professionally. By day, we focus on productivity; by night, our dreams reveal energy drains, damage from negativity, or weariness with struggle. Often these dreams imply a metaphorical solution: we pray, scream, accept rescue, or fight furiously. This dreamer realizes being awake and active is better than playing possum. Her struggle towards “eyes open” consciousness implies being a clear eyed, realistic advocate for herself and her future will vanquish this particular foe.
