Dream 01_200501

Dream of the Month (January 2005)
  1. Title: Baby Elephant

  2. Date of the Dream: 12/9/2004 (mailed Thursday, 9 December 2004)

  3. Dream: I am walking on beautiful path. No one else is with me. I come upon a baby elephant. He is adorable! When I turn to go back to what seems like a resort where my family is waiting, the baby elephant follows me. When I get back to the group of people, no one else seems to notice the baby elephant. I have to point him out to people. All of a sudden everyone is gasping, because we realize the baby elephant is lying on the floor and has given birth to another (much smaller) baby elephant, who is wet, tiny and lying alongside the first one.

  4. Significant life event: No one major significant life event.

  5. Personal concerns/issues: That night we had to tell my husband's parents that we could not come visit for Christmas because we cannot afford it.

  6. Associations: This is why I am so confused. My children are 11 and 7; I don't have any babies nor do I want any. I don't know what the elephant is all about, unless it represents some big thing that is in the room that people aren't willing to discuss. I am also embarking on a weight loss program; maybe the baby elephant is me, giving birth to a new me?

  7. Category: Anomalous

  8. Pen Name: Happy's Girl

Dr. Holloway's Comments:

Striking Characteristics: Precious or whimsical animals in dreams often reflect special properties in the dreamer’s potential.

This dream is about the discovery of something wonderful and magical while going about your normal life. Often through accidents or disappointments, we experience unanticipated gifts. When we see these magic moments for what they are, it is as if the spirit of the day follows us home.

The dreamer is the only one who sees and recognizes the elephant at first. So we can infer that she already has the gift of recognizing the special and magical when she encounters it. We can also infer that in her circle, she is sometimes the only person who “gets it” when beautiful things happen. Special creatures in dreams can represent our divergent thinking, creativity, intuition or faith.

Like cartoon animals, they are often wild and tame at the same time; possessed of animal skills and human intelligence. The climax of this dream shows the magical elephant delivering an even more extraordinary gift, almost at the dreamer’s feet. This is a strong metaphor for trusting in your instincts and feelings and welcoming their gifts. Don’t be dismayed if others “cannot see” the big picture initially. Trust the magic.
