Dream 01_200305

Dream of the Month (May 2003)
  1. Title: Short-Sighted

  2. Date of the Dream: 4/2/2003 (mailed Monday, 7 April 2003)

  3. Dream: Each time I experience this dream, it is in a different setting, mostly in public, with different people each time. At some point in the dream, I realize that I can’t focus properly, and then realize that I’ve forgotten to insert my contact lenses. I proceed to do so. The left one goes in just fine, however, the right one is troublesome. It is very large, about 3 inches in diameter, with rough, torn edges. I keep trying hard to bend it, fold it and maneuver it to make it fit, but it is no use. I keep trying and trying, determined not to give up. Sometimes in the dream, I make a sarcastic remark about the contact(s) being made for horses, and sometimes the horses are actually present in the dream, standing a few feet away.

  4. Significant life event: Recently my mother passed away and I was living too far away to be with her. Not sure what events might have occured right before previous episodes of the dream, although I have gone through 2 divorces and have worked much too hard over the last 5 yrs.

  5. Personal concerns/issues: Not sure

  6. Associations: None

  7. Category: Recurring

  8. Pen Name: Posey

Dr. Holloway's Comments:

Identifying Characteristics: Often corrective lenses have a symbolic connection to our perspective, our conceptual “seeing” and focusing.

It is not uncommon to dream of trouble with contact lenses or glasses. Vision is unclear, lenses don’t fit, or the prescription is out-of-date for the person you are today. The details of the ocular problem can be suggestive of real-life frustrations. In this case, the dream hints that a number of issues may be converging to make clarity a challenge. Your public responsibility, feeling unable to focus as you would like to, finding some kind of contact is not a good fit these days, all may be impacting your perspective, making you ragged at the edges. Since the right lens is not fitting, there are possible nuances that the masculine, out-in-the-world energy has been over-developed, or emphasized for so long that it has become enlarged and cumbersome. (There are other possible interpretations of course, this is just one example of how to work with this symbolism.)

Look for a situation in your life where you are tenaciously trying to make something fit which no longer is right for you. It could be an objective situation, or a way-of-being that isn’t serving your current goals. For example, if you tend to be a workhorse, and that is your default solution to everything, you may need to consider other perspectives, alternatives and a more diverse game plan. This isn’t a dream about being “wrong”; it seems to hint that some aspect of life (or aspect of self) has been overworked while other views, focuses and options have been neglected. The next time you return to your favorite problem or question, think “fresh perspective” and see if things look differently to you.
