Dream 01_200304

Dream of the Month (April 2003)
  1. Title: A Day Gone Wrong

  2. Date of the Dream: 3/01/2003 (mailed Sunday, 2 March 2003)

  3. Dream: A good friend of mine asks me to go with her to a beautiful, well-lighted cave lake. The water is clear, the fish are colorful; it is peaceful. I am sitting on the side of an incline looking down into the water. I am watching a heron skillfully catching a small fish, when my friend swims into view and is feeding the fish. The fish go into their eating frenzy and I am laughing. Then a huge shark comes up out of the water from nowhere, and the wake of the wave pushes my friend back out of sight. The shark dives back down into the deep. Before I can respond, the shark swims back horizontally into my view. Its mouth is wide open, and my friend is sitting inside. She is limp and her eyes are a vacant stare. The shark swims slowly in front of me.

  4. Significant life event: Nothing significant. But I was ill with a virus.

  5. Personal concerns/issues: Whether or not to buy a home and commit to this area for several years.

  6. Associations: The friend in the dream and I are artists. She has just begun a painting of a cave with a lake.

  7. Category: Anomalous

  8. Pen Name: Cascade

Dr. Holloway's Comments:

Identifying Characteristics: Sharks sometimes reflect a fear we find difficult to handle, not from lack of courage or resources, but because there are so many uncertain elements involved.

Feeding the fish in the cave-lake may represent a situation that seems to provide emotional closeness, connection, and the promise of intimacy and understanding. This setting could represent a relationship, an opportunity, or a situation. The sudden appearance of the threatening shark, with its ability to devour someone whole, suggests there is a worrisome element involved in this potential.

When a creature swallows someone, there is a sense of falling into a trance, of being consumed by something. It is possible you are witnessing the sub-text of your friend’s adventure; worrying about subtle clues the friend has not yet recognized. It may also be that the dream is an allegory for a choice you’re facing: a situation teeming with life that involves an unknown element that makes you uneasy. The gift of the dream is its signal to stay conscious. Be honest with yourself, even if you cannot be brutally honest with others, and try to stay clear about what is most appropriate and desirable for you at this point in your life. By holding the intention to “stay awake” and keep your equilibrium, your choices will be consistent with what you want to create and experience.
