Dream of the Month (April 2002)
Dr. Holloway's Comments:
Identifying Characteristics: Challenges hidden from others represent real-life issues made harder by our current approaches to them.
This dream presents a variation on the theme of the “endless thread” that can never be adequately pulled out of one’s mouth. In some cases dreamers are alone and frightened by what is happening to them. In this dream, the heroine is possibly more focused on concealing her problem from others than she is upon getting adequate support and help for herself. Keeping in mind that dreams exaggerate our problems and our approaches to solutions, there is a strong clue here that the wish to keep suffering secret is one thing that is making resolution hard to achieve.
The thread (or hair) usually represents an ongoing tension that has been difficult to consciously understand, bring to light and discuss. In many cases there is a pain from the past that was “impossible” to articulate due to earlier circumstances. This doesn’t mean it’s necessary to wrestle with the past in order to redeem the future, but it can be useful to consider how current triggers parallel early worries and as a result, may seem amplified in their importance. It isn’t always necessary to speak out or confront others about what you have to say. But it is important for such dreamers to make room to live life in a way that expresses their individual truth. Let your life, your choices, your creativity be your voice. If you choose truth in small and large choices, you’ll find peace and connection much sooner than you might have believed possible. (To learn more about freedom from unnecessary confines, look at the classic book by Marian Woodman, “Addiction to Perfection.”)
