Dr. Holloway's Comments:

Identifying Characteristics:

The consumption of non-food objects in dreams often reflects the attempt to take in experiences that are difficult to tolerate.

In dreams, the food (and other items) we consume, tend most often to represent experiences we are taking in. Our ability to digest and benefit from dream foods reflects our success in processing our experiences and absorbing nutrients (learning and love) and releasing what isn’t right for us.

When we eat indigestible items that sicken or choke us, this implies some facet of our experience is taking a toll. There is a temptation to dismiss our subjective experience as being unimportant, what do feelings count when faced with necessities, and worldly problems? Yet dreams suggest we are mistaken to try and force ourselves to endure what is emotionally toxic. Over time “taking it and liking it” can dampen contentment or compromise well being.

This warning theme is amplified when the dreams suggest some aspect of our experience is not only difficult to tolerate (not food), but is actually poisonous. The poison does not usually have anything to do with literal poisons, but is typically a symbol for circumstances or emotional climates that have gradually become noxious. Like developing a psychic allergy to a certain condition which then becomes gradually toxic.

If this strikes a chord of recognition, then the task becomes to direct more energy and intention to supporting your own needs, and to scrutinize any tendency to try and “erase” your needs or consistently put yourself in last place. While circumstances appear to dictate our choices, our deeper intention and awareness can also be potent factors in improving situations that seem resistant to change. If your body reacts with a tight stomach or throat to certain choices, think carefully about them, and try not to let every compromise be drawn from your personal reservoir of energy and tolerance. One small decision to support your inner needs will lead to other small decisions in your favor, and soon the tide will begin to turn so that other elements in your life will tend to become more nourishing and supportive.
