Dream of the Month (October 2007)
  1. Title: Earthquake

  2. Date of the Dream: 9/26/2007 (mailed Thursday, 27 September 2007)

  3. Dream: I was in the basement with my fiancee, and I noticed the furniture swaying. I finally realized that we were having an earthquake. I ran to the back door and called for my cat. My fiancee ran upstairs to help my mother, sister and brother, so I followed him upstairs. After the quake stopped, I noticed the house had suffered a lot of damage. Then about a half hour later, another earthquake happened. This time, the house was left at an angle and had suffered even more damage. I ran outside, and the other houses in the neighborhood were badly damaged too.

  4. Significant life event: I had a disagreement with my boss.

  5. Personal concerns/issues: I feel I need to look for another job because one of my bosses has anger management issues.

  6. Associations: I had a disagreement with my boss.

  7. Category: Nightmare

  8. Pen Name: Julie's Dream

Dr. Holloway's Comments:

Striking Characteristics: Earthquakes can symbolize events or situations that rock our sense of continuity.

This dream depicts a force rocking the foundation of the dreamerís home life, and also suggests she should expect the unexpected. The earthquake was bad enough the first time, but earthquakes repeat. Whatever force is coming at her in waking life is something that is not simply a one-time event: it may recur. When dreams show us trying to rescue or locate our pets, this suggests real life stressors are driving our vulnerabilities underground; we may feel threatened, attacked, or need to avoid showing any quality that could be construed as weakness. This is a time to do a realistic risk assessment about the conditions that are causing this sense of danger, and to think about the long haul. By using long-range goals as the compass, youíll know how to navigate through current challenges and avoid being drawn into drama that has nothing to do with the future youíre building.
