Dream of the Month (March 2004)
Dr. Holloway's Comments:
Striking characteristics: The elephant may represent a larger-than-normal task or project.
This dream has a theme of success, and it is a success that flies in the face of tradition or “the norm,” as represented by the dairyman and the regular cows. There is more to work with here, more to go around, and even some innovation in how such a large task can be undertaken. Although it might be strange for most of us to milk an elephant, for the dreamer this is natural; we sense an agreement between her and the elephant. They are both ‘in the flow’ and tackling challenges as they come. She is so into the task that she’s standing in the tub of milk; this suggests an immersion in her project, and a full commitment to it that comes from a pretty deep place.
We get the sense that there is an internal locus of decision here, and that the way things are coming together is somehow perfect. Finally, the metaphor of milking could be important. The symbolism sometimes reflects an almost-maternal ability to nourish people and situations. If this is true in this case, then the implication is that the dreamer is standing in the right place, doing the right thing at the right time. The elephant could have personal meaning specific to the dreamer, but in broad terms it is frequently associated with wisdom, power, affiliation and size. So we can marvel that the dreamer is somehow relating to something that is a big deal, something on a grand scale that is yielding it’s nourishment quite freely to her. She may encounter resistance from those around her, and she may want to watch future dreams for any signs of imbalance. But for now, the light is green, and she can certainly savor the flow of productivity and the unique relationship she’s developing with her own wisdom and power.
