Dream of the Month (February 2002)
Dr. Holloway's Comments:
Identifying Characteristics: The missions of spies, secret agents and similar dream heroes often reflect the subtle goals and purposes that are crystallizing within the psyche of the dreamer.
Many people dream of being secret agents, conducting dangerous operations that seem like suspense novels or movies. Plots of this kind are most often created by the person who has both a sharp intellect and a deep sense of passion. Sometimes these two “players” in the psyche strive to create happiness by propelling us toward their differing agendas, or at least by pulling us to travel along different roads toward the same ultimate ideals. It is the task of the dreamer to become sufficiently conscious of the subtle movements and stirrings within so that the needs of differing parts of the self are not abandoned while one aspect of the individual has dominance, or is “driving” the personality.
There are fashions and politics within the psyche, as well as in the world. Sometimes when we dream of covert operations, this simply means that shifts in our desires or attention are taking place that are profound enough to cause a slow, quiet, internal reorganization to occur. This does not mean that our lives must necessarily change, but it is usually a signal that the way in which we experience events, and the weight we give to them may change. By becoming an observer of the self, in dreams, thinking, intuition and attention, a balance can be maintained so that any necessary shifts can sort themselves out with little disruption of waking responsibilities and optimal results in the long range of our lives.
