Dream 01_200102

Dream of the Month (February 2001)
  1. Title: Sinking Feeling

  2. Date of the Dream: 1/14/2001 (mailed Tuesday, 16 January 2001)

  3. Dream: I awoke at 8 a.m. my dream unfinished. I was exasperated. My girlfriend Christina and I were racing to get back to the ferry dock to catch the ferry from Seattle to San Francisco. In the fog, we were racing around and under the planks and pillars looking for the path to the ferry dock we needed. Water was lapping against the walkways.

We were in a slight panic. The walkways were a maze: twisting, turning, and doubling back so we never seemed to get much closer though we could see the ferry coming into the dock. I was wearing a courier bag with a Palazzo logo on it and inside it was my personal laptop computer.

We reached a point where the walkway was broken and boards were floating in the water. Christina jumped first and made it to the other side. I jumped next and landed in the water and began to sink. I fought to get back to the surface and Christina pulled me up and out. And then a small group of people walked past us. They had come down a short flight of steps that was close to the street and headed down a straight walkway toward the ferry. We just stood there gaping and then I woke up.

  4. Significant life event: Christina was the reason I first visited Seattle. She was my friend and neighbor who moved here in November of 1997 to work for MS. I lived with her first for 6 months when I first got here from the Bay Area in July of 1998. And then she moved back to San Francisco in August of 1999, where she lives now with her husband. And I regard her as a close friend whom I miss still very much. We use to do a great deal together as roommates and friends.

  5. Personal concerns/issues: None that I am aware of.

  6. Associations: I am puzzled by the maze of walkways when the clear and direct path was right there all along.

  7. Pen Name: Debbie Drake

Dr. Holloway's Comments:

Identifying Characteristics: Docks and ferries typically represent routes to overcome challenges or achieve goals.

This dream is all about how to get what you want most right now. Whether it's to escape from a tangle of some kind, or to move toward your heart's desire; you're frustrated and confused as to how to go about it. (Fog in dreams represents the confusion between what we think of a situation, and how we feel about it. You're not going to be able to see the way clearly, until you become less conflicted inside about what you want. Come to a decision about whether it's worth it, and if the time is right. Then tackle the "how to" part of the solution. ) If you choose to go for it, what you need is a metaphorical bridge of sorts, to get you from present circumstances to more desirable ones.

If you're trying to do something creative or make a change you've never managed before, find someone who has done what you want to do, and explore their strategy as well as their advice. Beware of your reflexive tendency to try too hard and complicate the problem. You may overlook a much easier route, because you're focusing on being brave and soldiering on. Get clear that you really want to do this, and then share it with others. Bit by bit, you'll start getting signs and suggestions that will form the "bridge" to tomorrow that you're looking for.
