Dream of the Month (August 2000)
Dr. Holloway's Comments:
Identifying Characteristics: Birds often represent creative, even inspirational qualities in the dreamer.
When dreams present us with animals in distress we should pay attention. They often reflect potentials in ourselves that have been abandoned, or starved. When animals are confined in bizarre, unnatural ways the implication is that some part of the dreamer is restricted in a manner that goes against it’s very nature. The sensitive person who works amidst back-stabbing, the artistic soul who is forbidden their passion, or the emotional nature that lives in a dry, analytical relationship. While differences can enrich our lives, rigid restrictions against our inclinations destroy vitality and rob us of potential satisfaction. Ducks symbolize a nature that is comfortable with ideas, spirituality and emotion, and an urge to mingle with others of like mind. When such qualities are restricted, they may swirl around in the mind in a circular fashion. Hungering for expression but being dissuaded by internal objections.
The toilet may sometimes represent a place for elimination, and it also can be associated with the expression of ideas, talents and personality. The implication here is that you have “stored” some lively ideas and interests because there seems no suitable outlet for them in your current lifestyle. You may think rationally that you should flush away your old dreams, or those things that “won’t pay.” But the vivid colors of these ducks suggest strong feelings and energy are attached to this creative spark. You would be wiser to give these ideas a bigger playground in which to fly, without expecting more than satisfaction and stimulation as your reward. Give yourself permission to do what you love, and enjoy the refreshment that follows.
