Dream of the Month (April 1998)
- Title: The Shoelace
- Date of the Dream: 1996 (mailed Thursday, 19 March 1998)
I am stuck in traffic in my van. I am quietly observing everything around me when I notice a man hijacking an eighteen-wheeler. I am trying to figure out what to do, when the man who is doing the hi-jacking sees me, and realizes that I can identify him. Traffic is at a standstill, so I jump out of my van and start to run, but my shoelace gets caught in the door. I ignore it and take off, and the shoelace starts to stretch, it doesn't break. The man has a gun and fires it at me. He misses, and he throws the man in the truck to the ground and starts to chase me. Running like crazy, I jump over the retaining wall of the overpass and run down the concrete embankment, all the while the shoelace is still stretching. The man is still chasing me. I run through an area where there seem to be a lot of homeless people milling around, and then I am running in front of what seems to be like an outdoor market where the frozen foods are kept. The shoelace is still stretching. I look into the freezer and there are bags of frozen french fries. I grab a bag of these and look behind me and the man is still chasing me with the gun. I just keep running and the shoelace just keeps stretching, and that is when I woke up.

Dr. Holloway's Comments:
This dream depicts one woman's struggle to keep herself intact while running an obstacle course to protect others. The stalled traffic represents the dreamer's normal life process which has been "jammed" by external factors. The van, often a symbol of family or group entities must be abandoned for more dangerous and vulnerable travel on foot. She leaves the family, yet remains tied to it, as she begins the ordeal.
Her normal life has been hijacked, and she is racing for survival. There is an obvious reference to "living on a shoestring" and stretching her ingenuity and energy quite thin. Homeless people often appear in the background of dreams when we face economic pressures that shake our sense of security. When finances are a worry dreamers will often climb or face "an embankment," which appears to be a veiled reference to banking. The menacing force armed with a gun represents the situation that is driving her in her struggle.
The frozen fries suggest the dreamer's emotional response to her struggle was both frustration and numbness; since the food symbolizes sizzling heat and icy cold. Though the elements pitted against her were significant, her extreme mobility and shifting tactics indicate a high survival quotient. It is very likely she adapted well and responded effectively to the challenges she faced.
