Dream of the Month (October 1997)
- Title: The Mystery
- Date of the Dream: 9/25/1997 (mailed Thursday, 25 September 1997)
- Dream: There had been a body found that had been dead for a very long time. The police and other officials said their investigation was starting to show evidence that my father, who has been dead for years (in real life he has been dead for 17 years) had killed this person. They found this person's body after finding someone else recently shot.
My family was very upset that people would think for a moment that my father could do such a thing, since he himself was in law enforcement and an outstanding citizen. (Which in real life is true.) We, the family, were all trying not to show our emotions in public, thinking that if they see our positive attitude they will believe that he couldn't had done this. I had somehow known that the two deaths were linked and that the recently dead person did in fact actually kill the other and my father really did not have anything to do with it. But for some reason the officials just would not listen.
- Significant life event: We are going through difficult financial times.
- Personal concerns/issues: Had been watching ""Law and Order,"" which concerned a murder mystery.
- Associations: none
- Category: nightmare
- Pen Name: Buffy
Dr. Holloway's Comments:
If we look carefully, murder mysteries in our dreams can explain the emotional and psychological reasons why we've experienced (or even caused) a recent loss, (such as the end of a relationship, or another abrupt change.) The "body" generally symbolizes a part of the dreamer's personality that was "killed off" in response to certain demands in the past. In this case it is likely the dreamer was called upon to be brave, and keep her emotions private when her father was lost in waking life all those years ago. Reasonable and even wise decisions can still carry with them a hefty price tag that we don't even notice until years later. The associated "recent" murder in this dream is likely symbolic of a change, loss or disappointment she experienced. The dream is pointing out how an early decision brought about around the time of her family's loss 17 years ago, is still impacting her choices today. She is right, her father is not the culprit. But an honest review of the brave choices she made earlier can permit her to allow parts of herself to come back to life now, and her options and enjoyment of life may be all the richer for it.
