Dream 01_199606

Dream of the Month (June 1996)

  1. Title: Broken Computer

  2. Date of the Dream: May 26, 1996

  3. Dream: I am sitting on the floor in front of my Atari 400 (a very antiquated computer from my childhood that I haven't seen in 10 years). The monitor shows error after error with the communications engine. (That is bizarre, because my Atari 400 never had that.) I try to fix the problems and get frustrated.

I lie back on the floor with my head resting against the molding at the base of the wall and look over to watch a black and red ant crawl away from me down the molding. The ant pivots and morphs into a butterfly and flys away. I sit back up and suddenly know how to fix the problem with the computer.

  4. Significant life event: I recently started working for IBM doing technical support for modems/computers.

  5. Personal concerns/issues: Regaining financial stability with my new job and improving my lifestyle.

  6. Associations: I assume this is connected to my job, but the old computer and the insect intrigue me.

  7. Category: Anomalous

  8. Pen Name: TechnoButt

Dr. Holloway's Comments:

You are right to suspect this dream deals with the resumption of personal power and improved conditions. There is an artistry to the image of knowing how to fix the computer problem, because this is what you do, and because it reflects your ability to improve things that have sent you error messages in your own life. I believe the old computer may reflect outdated trouble with communications that arose from your childhood, which in turn you have recently broken through and improved. For many people the ant is associated with the work ethic, since little ants are so industrious they can do almost anything. Red and black are sometimes connected with power in dreams, so my hunch is your industry, hard work and tenacity are bringing you back to your personal power and freedom. You have likely used your head to reconsider some of the influences that molded you in early life, and this reflection combined with your abilities and effort have helped you transform into a creature of freedom and beauty. (The butterfly is perhaps the most prevalent symbol of tranformation, personal evolution, and emergence into a new form.) You may now be moving through the world in a very different way. Congratulations.
