Symbol Tip: Forgotten Purse or Wallet

by Gillian Holloway, Ph.D. (Dream Discoveries Newsletter, Summer 1995)

If you're working with a dream that involves the loss, or the threat of losing a purse or wallet, consider the symbolism of what would be lost if that happened. Here are common associations to the contents of a purse or wallet:

  • Money (symbolizing profit, loss, security, and economic status.)
  • Drivers License (symbolizing your identity.)
  • Credit Cards (symbolizing the amount of credit you give yourself, and the credit others give you in life. This is often more than economic credit. It may represent credit for achievements, ability and self-esteem as well.)
  • Feminine - Purse (in some cases the purse, being a predominantly feminine symbol, may deal with issues of femininity, worth as a woman, or even the physical womb.)

Changing jobs, moving, testing for a professional license or contemplating a big investment can cause a person to dream of losing a purse or wallet. This imagery is typical of those "in between" phases of life, when you may be searching for the next job, restructuring your life after a divorce, or struggling on the threshold of an expanded career. When you haven't yet found the "next thing" all you experience is loss of the "old thing" - and that loss of familiar identity, money or credit may well be depicted by loss of a purse or wallet. Remember the feeling of losing something is normal right now, although uncomfortable, and this imagery doesn't mean you really are going to lose what is important - only that is currently feels like you have been cut adrift. Understanding this symbolism can help you be more patient with the ups and downs your confidence may take during waking life. Trust the process, and take special care of your needs at this time. Although your conscious mind may be very distracted with making "to-do" lists, and checking out options, there is a part of you inside that is just plain scared sometimes. This part may fear that nothing will ever be the same, and is completely unaware that things will actually be improved in the future once you get over the rocky spots. So, give yourself a little homework. Put one more thing on the to do list.

Take a little time to silently reassure your inner self that you will take care of yourself no matter what. You will find a better job, you won't let others mistreat you, you will accept credit for your accomplishments, and you will maintain a threshold of well-being. Becoming a custodian of your well-being sounds absurdly simple, but the act of making this resolve more conscious can truly make you more comfortable and confident on all levels. Make the change work for you (I know that's easier said than done, but make that your intention) and you may well find the tide turning in your favor in a big way.
